【Summary】
On Thursday, May 21, Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo announced that the number of coronavirus cases and burdens on hospitals nationwide have reduced and that the Government lifts the State of Emergency Declaration for three prefectures; Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo.

The Declaration remains in place for five others: Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, Kanagawa, and Hokkaido as there is a continued risk, even though the number of patients is declining.

The Government, with the panel of experts, will evaluate the situation of these prefectures as early as May 25. If there is an improvement, the state of emergency will be lifted without waiting until May 31.

Abe said that there is a risk for a second wave of infections. He encouraged people to keep social distance, refrain from going out, avoid traveling across borders, and adopt a “new lifestyle.”
